Though SCCC is now a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with no religious affiliation; its origins are based on the efforts of a determined Catholic nun named Sister Carmen Ptacnik. Through many others' continued dedication to Sister Carmen's work, the Sister Carmen Community Center was incorporated as a nonprofit in 1978, and Sister Carmen's name was kept in her honor.
